India’s Semi-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread After 1-3 Loss to Netherlands

Amstelveen - India suffered a 1-3 defeat against co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, leaving their semi-final hopes hanging by a thread.

The match remained goalless until the 41st minute, when Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive lapse to put the Netherlands ahead. Tjep Hoedemakers doubled the lead in the 51st minute with a crucial deflection.

India responded almost immediately, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner to make it 2-1. However, the Netherlands restored their two-goal advantage four minutes later when Thijs van Dam finished a swift counter-attack.

India started brightly and created early circle entries, but the Dutch defence remained composed. Both teams had opportunities, with India’s Dilpreet Singh coming close in the first half. India also earned penalty corners but failed to convert them.

The Netherlands, who moved to six points at the top of Pool E, managed the closing stages effectively to secure victory. India remain without a point and must beat Argentina in their next match while depending on other results to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
