An interaction programme with press teams from Keralam, Rajasthan and Punjab was organised today at PIB Bhubaneswar, providing an opportunity for the visiting media persons to engage with officials of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) on the evolving media landscape and changing dimensions of journalism.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Akhil Kumar Mishra, Additional Director General, PIB & CBC, Bhubaneswar, highlighted the rapid transformation of journalism in the digital era and the emerging challenges before the profession. He observed that journalism is facing an existential crisis concerning its identity and role in society. Noting that nearly two-thirds of news consumers now access news through social media feeds, he said that the growing convergence of mass media and social media is reshaping traditional journalistic values and practices. Emphasising the need to preserve the core principles of journalism while adapting to the changing media environment, Shri Mishra stressed the importance of balancing traditional values with the demands of the evolving media ecosystem. He further pointed out that the boundaries between the newsmaker, reporter, editor, consumer and distributor are increasingly becoming blurred, making professional ethics, credibility and journalistic responsibility more important than ever.
Dr. Athira Thampi, Deputy Director, PIB Keralam; Shri Dharmesh Bharati, Deputy Director, PIB Jaipur; and Shri Pritam Singh, Director, PIB Chandigarh were present on the occasion.
The programme commenced with a welcome to the visiting press teams, followed by introductions by the participating journalists from the three states. The significance of the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative was also highlighted, with emphasis on its role in promoting cultural exchange, mutual understanding and strengthening the bonds of national unity among different regions of the country.
The programme concluded with an interactive session between the visiting press teams and officials of PIB and CBC, with participants exchanging views on contemporary issues, emerging trends and the evolving responsibilities of journalism in the digital age.
