Amstelveen, Netherlands- The Indian men’s hockey team began its FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign on a winning note, defeating Wales 3-1 in their Pool D opener at the Wagener Hockey Stadium.
India’s goals came from Sanjay (8’) and captain Harmanpreet Singh (11’, 43’). Sanjay opened the scoring from a penalty corner before Harmanpreet converted two set-piece opportunities to underline his importance in India’s attack. Wales pulled one back through Sam Welsh (56’), but India held firm defensively to secure three points.
India started cautiously but soon took control of possession and territory. Sanjay capitalised on a penalty-corner opportunity in the eighth minute, while Harmanpreet doubled the advantage three minutes later with a precise flick.
India continued to dominate through the second and third quarters, creating several opportunities. Harmanpreet added his second goal in the 43rd minute with a powerful grounded flick, putting India 3-0 ahead.
Wales reduced the deficit late in the fourth quarter, but goalkeeper Mohith HS and the Indian defence stood strong in the closing stages.
Harmanpreet, named Player of the Match, said the team had started well but needed to create more chances and score field goals.
India will next face England on August 17 at the same venue.
